CGI - SOUTHERN CENTER FALL CLASS

GROWING LEADERS IN NEW (AND OLDER) CONGREGATIONS - OCTOBER 9 - 10
The New Church Development Committee will be hosting a retreat on October 9 and 10 at Camp Bethel's House of Pillars. Jonathan Shively, Executive Director of Congregational Life Ministries for the Church of the Brethren will be the main speaker for this event. The theme of “Growing Leaders in New (and Older) Congregations” will focus on leadership development in congregational life, with a special focus on new church plants. The registration fee of $60 includes admission to the retreat as well as dinner on Friday and breakfast and lunch on Saturday. The retreat opens with an optional session at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 9. The main retreat will begin with registration at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 9, and will continue through Saturday afternoon at 4:15. CEU's will be available for those attending. SHAPED BY GOD AND COMMUNITY: STORIES AND REFLECTIONS RETREAT – OCTOBER 10
A special spiritual retreat, “Shaped by God and Community: Stories and Reflections,” will be held at the Hollins Road Church of the Brethren (2404 Hollins Road, NE, Roanoke, Virginia) on Saturday, October 10th. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the retreat will be from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
In our faith journeys we have been inspired and guided by others in the faith community. Those persons may have been our peers or may have been older or younger. This retreat is a time to reflect and honor those persons in our lives. In order to encourage and trigger some of those memories, we have several local sisters and brothers of all ages to share reflections from their journeys. You may know them: Jane Wood (Bethlehem), Tara Shepherd (Mount Union), John Reed (Cloverdale), Bryan Hanger (Roanoke, Oak Grove), Mike Varner (Topeco) and Cathy Huffman (Germantown Brick). Their brief sharings will be followed by opportunities for guided reflections as individuals, as well as small and large group discussions. SPECIAL BRETHREN HERITAGE DAY TRIP—OCTOBER 17
The District Historical Committee is sponsoring a one-day bus trip on October 17, 2015 to the Bridgewater area to include stops at the Brethren-Mennonite Heritage Center, Bridgewater Retirement Home, Bridgewater College, the Tunker House and the John Kline Homestead. Pickup will be at the First Church of the Brethren in Rocky Mount (8:00 a.m.) and the District Resource Center (8:45 a.m.). Cost of the tour will be $29.99 per person which includes lunch. There will not be a dinner stop so those needing to eat on time should bring something with you. The annual Disaster Response Volunteer Appreciation Dinner will be held on Sunday, October 25, at the Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren (2363 Brick Church Road, Rocky Mount, Virginia). A PILGRIMAGE OF JUST PEACE - OCTOBER 29-31
Bethany Seminary will hold their seventh Presidential Forum weekend October 29-31, 2015. It will feature internationally known speakers, Bethany leadership, and presenters from the peace church traditions.
"Conflict is relational, and often it arises from a variety of factors: economic, environmental, racial, religious, etc.," says Jeff Carter, president of Bethany. "In order to create a culture of peace and prevent conflict, peacemaking must be equally relational. Drawing from experts in a variety of fields, the Forum will address the cost of not having peace and the ecumenical call for a just peace, which includes truth, reconciliation, and restorative justice."

DISTRICT CONFERENCE YOUTH ACTIVITIES – NOVEMBER 13-14
Everyone is invited to Friday night worship at 7:00 P.M. at Grandin Court Baptist Church, 2660 Brambleton Avenue, SW, Roanoke, VA. On Friday evening, the senior highs will have an overnight retreat at Central Church of the Brethren, downtown Roanoke. Registration will be from 8:45 - 9:15 p.m. (If needed, come after your school’s football game!) A young adult from Brethren Volunteer Service will lead our retreat. In the morning, we will join other senior high youth and the junior highs at 8:00 AM at District Conference. We will carpool from there and have a work project at Camp Bethel! Wear shoes and clothes that could get dirty or paint splattered! We will eat lunch at Camp Bethel and enjoy time on the grounds before concluding and heading back to District Conference. Adult leaders will be asked to help with transportation. Youth who drive, and any youth who are passengers, must have permission from parents to take cars to Camp Bethel. “You are the light of the world ... Let your light shine!” is the theme of the 2015 Virlina District Conference. The scripture reference is from Matthew 5:14-16. The conference dates are November 13 and 14, and conference will he held at the Grandin Court Baptist (2660 Brambleton, Avenue, SW, Roanoke, Virginia). The conference officers are Dava C. UPCOMING BRETHREN ACADEMY CLASSES
The Brethren Academy will be offering Preaching Peace, Justice and Care for Creation on-site at McPherson College November 12-15, 2015. David Radcliff will be the instructor. This class will earn a Ministry/Ministry Skills unit and may be used for the Brethren College Experience requirement. Pastors will learn two continuing education units (2 CEUs). The registration deadline is October 12, 2015.
The Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership is offering Introduction to Pastoral Care Opportunities beginning in January. Carolyn Stahl Bohler will be the instructor for the course.
This class will use a blended format. It will begin on the campus of Bethany Theological Seminary in Richmond, IN January 11-13, 2015. There will be two follow up sessions via Adobe Connect (multi-framed video conference format) on the evenings of January 25 and February 1. Students will explore five primary pastoral care opportunities.
The Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership is offering Introduction to the New Testament January 18 - March 11, 2016. Matt Boersma will be the instructor for this online course.
The 2016 TRIM/EFSM Orientation is scheduled for July 28-31, 2016. Orientation begins on Thursday morning and concludes Sunday morning.
TABITHA HARTMAN RUDY SERVES INTERNSHIP
At the District Board meeting in May, the board members voted to have Tabitha Hartman Rudy serve as a student intern for the district from September 2015 thru April 2016. As a Bethany Seminary student, Tabitha is required to have 400 hours of Ministry Formation administration training. She requested that this internship take place through the Virlina District Resource Center in learning the administrative and ministry functions of the district. With the board approval and the seminary approval, Tabitha began her work on September 1.
Tabitha’s work will be determined by David Shumate and Emma Jean Woodard on behalf of the District Board, the District Resource Center, and district congregations. A Teaching Committee, consisting of four individuals representing the board and district, will assist in this process. Emma Jean Woodard is her supervisor.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION - TASK TEAM AND SURVEY
The Virlina District Commission on Nurture appointed a task team to look at Christian Education for Virlina congregations. The task team has been several times and have completed a survey form for individuals/congregations to complete. The Good Shepherd holds a Taize service on the second Friday of each month from 6 until 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come to this time of quiet centering on the Lord.
