DISTRICT EXECUTIVE MINISTERS OUT OF OFFICE FOR MEETINGS
David K. Shumate, District Executive Minister, and Emma Jean Woodard, Associate District Executive Minister, will be leaving on Saturday, January 23, to participate in the winter meeting of the Council of District Executives (CODE). They will be out of the office until February 1. As always, they will be checking e-mail on a regular basis. The District Resource Center will be keeping normal hours during their absence.
 
EVENTS IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE YOU KNOW
C. Berkley Stevens, ordained minister and former pastor of the Nineveh Church, has been a patient in the Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. He suffered a stroke last week.
 
Harry W. “Peanut” Shelton, pastor of the Boones Mill Church, fell on the ice on January 20 and is a patient at the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (Room 997).
 
Troy Sonafrank, son of Hal and Sandi Sonafrank of the Coulson Church, has been a patient in the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC with blood pressure and kidney problems. 
 
Gregory M. Howell, pastor of the Crab Orchard Church in Raleigh County, West Virginia, will be ordained to the Gospel Ministry on Sunday, January 27, 2016 at 4 p.m. Greg is a graduate of the Christian Growth Institute. He began his service there on April 1, 2014 and previously served as associate pastor of the PleasantDale Church. PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN TIME.
 
Karen B. Cassell, a member of the First Church of the Brethren in Roanoke, Virginia and a hospice chaplain with Good Samaritan Hospice, will be ordained to the Gospel Ministry on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at 4 p.m. Karen is a graduate of Bethany Theological Seminary in Richmond, Indiana. She formerly served as assistant pastor of the Cloverdale Church.
 
NORTHERN AREA MINISTERS - FEBRUARY 1, 2016
The Northern Area Ministers of the Virlina District will meet on Monday, February 1, 2016 at the Daleville Church of the Brethren at 8:30 a.m. The meal will be $7.00. Please notify the Daleville Church of your planned attendance by calling the church office at (540) 992-2042 or by e-mail at <

SENIOR HIGH IYC RETREAT - FEBRUARY 6-7, 2016
Senior High IYC Retreat will be held Saturday, February 6 -Sunday, February 7 at the Antioch Church of the Brethren.  All Senior Highs, from grades 9-12, are invited to share this time with the Interdistrict  Youth Council of Bridgewater College.  Registration starts at 9:30 A.M. and the retreat concludes after lunch on Sunday.  We will study the theme "Some Assembly Required" based on Matthew 6: 19-34.  We will worship with Antioch and share in their service through song and participation.  The fee for the overnight is $10.00 per person.  Contact the Virlina District Resource Center at <

SOUTHERN AREA MINISTERS - FEBRUARY 15, 2016

JUNIOR HIGH RETREAT - FEBRUARY 26-27, 2016
Junior High Retreat will be held Friday, February 26- Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Williamson Road Church of the Brethren.  This is a fun yearly retreat!  All Junior Highs, from grades 6-9, are invited to study, sing, play, and fellowship at this overnight retreat.  The cost is $10.00 per person.  Contact the Virlina District Resource Center at <

MINISTERS AND SPOUSES RETREAT - FEBRUARY 26-27
Join us for a time of reflection and fellowship! The annual Ministers and Spouses Retreat, sponsored by the Commission on Ministry, will be held February 26-27at the W. E. Skelton 4-H Center in Wirtz, VA. Our speaker will be Mary Jo Flory-Steury, the Associate General Secretary of the Church of the Brethren. CGI SPIRITUAL FORMATION RETREAT - MARCH 4-5 
Students in the Christian Growth Institute from the Virlina and Shenandoah Districts will gather at Brethren Woods the first weekend in March for the annual Spiritual Formation Retreat. The program will be led by Linda Alley, director of the Summer Institute for Spiritual Formation at Eastern Mennonite Seminary, and Emma Jean Woodard, associate district executive minister in Virlina District, on the theme "Gifted and Transformed: Prayer Practices for Walking with God." CHRISTIAN ED. TRAINING DAY - MARCH 12, 2016
“Know, Teach, Grow, Live” from Deuteronomy 6:6-9 is the theme of our Christian Education Training Day on March 12, 2016. The Christian Education Task Team is pleased to sponsor a training day for congregational leaders and teachers: “Know, Teach, Grow, Live”. This informational and inspirational event will feature many voices from around the District and focus on How to Call, How to Equip, and How to Support those in leadership and teaching positions. PILGRIMAGE XX - APRIL 1-3, 2016
Pilgrimage XX will be held April 1-3, 2016, at Camp Bethel. Pilgrimage is a spiritual retreat for adults of all ages, and God is working through this ministry in wonderful ways. The structure of the weekend includes talks, small groups, fun times, inspiring worship services, and much more. God knows where we are on our spiritual journey, and He meets us right there. 150TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION - JUNE 11, 2016
The Virlina District Historical Committee is sponsoring a "150 Year Anniversary Celebration of District Work in Virginia" at Camp Bethel on June 11, 2016. The 2016 Annual Conference Moderator, Andy Murray, a native of the Cloverdale Church in Botetourt County, Virginia, will be the keynote speaker and the worship service will feature special music.

www.virlina.org>. David W. Minnich from Durham, Peace Covenant is webmaster and been instrumental in getting a new website design and capabilities. Tabitha Hartman Rudy, a member of the Roanoke, Ninth Street Church and our student intern, is adding material and updating information weekly. Announcements, calendar, forms, news, and reports are being posted so there will be easier access to information. If you have not done so, check it out!
 
NINTH STREET MUSIC AND PIANO/ORGANIST POSITIONS AVAILABLE
These two part time positions are available to work with adult, youth, and children's music. Responsibilities include weekly choir practice, leading/accompanying congregational singing Sunday morning worship, leading/accompanying special music with choir,  seasonal music performances, and other selected church services as needed.
